Neighborhood Food Systems Planning

The city has a grant to develop a process for neighborhood-level food systems planning, with the goal to build more sustainability. “Food system” includes how food is produced, distributed and sold, and consumed. They’re piloting their work in north central Austin through next spring.

Right now, they’re mapping food system assets, like stores and gardens. Here’s one map from their work through October 5:NA Food Asset fresh produce Oct5_1

City staff and students from the LBJ School at UT are also beginning to conduct small group conversations with residents – what healthy food in our neighborhood looks like to us, what we would like to see more of, what we think of community gardens, school gardens, community kitchens, grocery stores, or convenience stores. Let them know if you’d like to participate.
