Our new elementary school, named for Dr Janis Guerrero Thompson, hosted a dedication ceremony for her family and friends. Speakers and presenters included school and district staff, members of Dr Guerrero Thompson’s family, and civic leaders.
Mr Thompson described his wife as “an ordinary woman, doing extraordinary things”. Formerly a teacher at our Lanier HS, she also worked at the Texas Education Agency and the Dana Center at the University of Texas, as well as being an active community volunteer.
The newly formed Guerrero Thompson choir performed. (They’re available for other neighborhood functions – contact the school and ask for the music teacher.)
The school actually opened in August 2013, with an enrollment of over 500. The 40-classroom building has a LEED silver energy efficiency rating. The grounds include two playscapes, a soccer/baseball field, and a shaded play court with basketball goals.
