“Walnut Creek Early College Prep Academy”

Thanks to Walnut Creek Elementary for hosting a luncheon for community members and business people! (Brisket!)

There are a couple of easy volunteer opportunities for people who are available for 30 minutes a week during school hours. One is to come have lunch with a student. Talk about whatever they want to talk about, play a board game if you’re done eating early, hang out. The other is to read with 2-3 students, in english or spanish. Contact Mycah Arellano 414-4499 or marella@austinisd.org if you’re interested. There’s a short training for each one.

There’s a lot going on at the campus:

  • Austin Learning Academy provides family-based education on campus in one of the portables. Preschoolers move towards school readiness by learning vocabulary and letter sounds while their parents work on basic adult education next door. Then they do interactive literacy activities together, which they can continue at home. Austin Learning Academy also offers ESL classes in the evenings. Contact Ruth Martinez 457-9194 or r.martinez@alaweb.org to register.
  • The entire fifth grade went camping a few weekends ago. Principal Perez described their adventures on a ropes course, identifying plants in the woods, and learning to fish.
  • Seedling Foundation also offers a mentoring program.

Keep up with Walnut Creek Family Center school/community activities
