North Austin Community Center groundbreaking

Thursday, October 13 at 10:30am

In 2006, voters approved $7.9 million in the general bond election to acquire land and build the new North Austin Community Recreation Center. The City of Austin signed a contract with the YMCA to jointly run a recreation center on the site at 1000 W. Rundberg Lane in North Austin (behind the HEB).

The project includes a new 36,000 square foot facility that features a gymnasium, community meeting room, computer lab, and swimming pool, with some of these facilities available to everyone and others limited to Y members. The new facility will be silver LEED certified and is scheduled to be complete in the fall of 2012.

The North Austin Community Recreation Center will also be the site of an artist-designed community garden, which will be commissioned through the Art in Public Places Program. The Artist Information Meeting is Tuesday, October 18, 6 pm at the Cultural Arts Division offices (201 E. 2nd Street).

More information about the design and about which facilities will be public
