Nana T. Hairston obituary

Nana T. Hairston, age 79, died December 12, 2007 at an Austin nursing home, just 2 months after being diagnosed with cancer. She was born in Houston, TX, on February 16, 1928, to Gladiola and James Sanders. She was raised by her beloved grandmother Oie. She was preceded in death by her brother Jimmie and her former husband Dan. Nana was an extraordinary neighborhood leader both in Houston and Austin. She was the first woman to serve on one of the major civic group boards in Houston. As president of the Georgian Acres Neighborhood Association in North Central Austin for almost 2 decades, she worked tirelessly to improve the community and was proud that she never lost a zoning case. She served as a member of the Chief’s Forum under Austin Police Chief Stan Knee. Her talent for gardening was exceptional, and the landscape of Heaven will surely be made more beautiful with her arrival. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday December 16, 2007, at Austin Peel and Son Funeral Home, 607 E. Anderson Lane Austin, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
